Madrid Atocha Station has medium and long-distance high-speed trains to Barcelona, Zaragoza, Seville, and Valencia, which are known as Puerta de Atocha Station (Estación de Puerta de Atocha, named after the Puerta de Atocha gate located at the original site of the station); in addition, the station also serves as a stop for suburban railway trains, which are called Atocha-Cercanías Station (Estación de Atocha-Cercanías). These trains are operated by the Spanish National Railway Company RENFE. In 2004, including Atocha Station, several Madrid suburban railway stations suffered train bomb attacks, resulting in 191 deaths. Subsequently, a monument was erected at Atocha Station to commemorate the victims. Atocha Train Station is located near Atocha in the Arganzuela district. The original facade faces the Plaza del Emperador Carlos V, a square that brings together many streets, including Atocha Street, Paseo del Prado, Isabel II Avenue at the Plaza de Atocha, Barcelona City Avenue, Méndez Álvaro Avenue, and others. Renfe is a state-owned company that has been operating freight and passenger trains since 1941. Atocha Train Station underwent a major renovation in 1992. Its hall, created by the famous architect Rafael Moneo, was transformed into a tropical rainforest garden. He used large amounts of glass, metal, and bright stones to construct a greenhouse, with a watering system that operates day and night, meticulously nourishing rows of tropical plants. Passengers waiting here can sit on the benches by the lotus pond, leisurely enjoying the green landscape while calmly waiting for the arrival of their train.
