Nine Ao Our Lady Village: A Hidden Gem of History and Tranquility in Macau

Nestled on a secluded hill at the eastern tip of Coloane Island in Macau, Nine Ao Our Lady Village is the site of Macau's only closed leprosy hospital, exuding a unique charm. The village is home to the Nine Ao Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, built in 1966, a remarkable example of 20th-century modern architecture. The triangular-shaped chapel features seven sections that reflect the theme of the "Seven Sorrows." Its northern door showcases a bronze crucifixion painting by an Italian sculptor, evoking a sense of serenity and sanctity. The leprosy hospital site consists of several colorful buildings, with restored scenes of the leprosy patients' lives, offering a glimpse into history and the passage of time. The village also has a single coffee shop, which is closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. On sunny days, the buildings glisten under the sunlight, and the statue of Our Lady shines brightly. Resting under the trees, one can feel a sense of peace and healing. A winding path leads up to a lighthouse, which is currently closed to the public. However, continuing along the left path reveals a breathtaking view of the sea. To reach Nine Ao Our Lady Village, take bus 21A to the Nine Ao Oil Depot and walk from there, or take bus 15 to a nearby stop in Nine Ao Village and walk for about 10 minutes. It is recommended to plan a half-day trip, with the morning sunlight perfect for photography. Visiting the chapel and the hospital site takes about 2-3 hours, leaving time to stroll and relax in the surrounding area.
