Macau's Our Lady Village | A Warm Light in a Remote Corner

Hey everyone 🤩, hidden in a corner of the bustling city of Macau lies Our Lady Village in Ka Ho, a place filled with humanistic care. This site is the former government leprosy hospital, the last of its kind in Macau. Established in 1885, the hospital initially consisted of simple brick houses. It was rebuilt and expanded in the 1930s. In 1963, Italian Salesian priest Father Gaetano Nicosia arrived and renamed the hospital "Our Lady Village," symbolizing the protection and assistance of the Virgin Mary. Here, the residents lived like brothers and sisters, dividing tasks among themselves, farming, repairing, cooking, and building a warm home together. With support from various parties, the new Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows was completed in 1966. Designed by Italian architect Giorgio Zucchi, the chapel features a simple yet unique structure with a roof supported by slanted beams divided into seven sections, symbolizing the "Seven Sorrows." The crucifix on the chapel's façade was crafted by renowned Italian sculptor Francisco Messina and gifted by the Vatican.
