Established in 1837 during the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty, it holds the distinction of being the oldest Mazu temple in the Luodong area.  Historical Background In the Jiaqing period, settlers from Zhangzhou expanded into the Luodong region, encompassing areas now known as Yihe, Luodong, and Juren. According to temple records, a traveling monk brought a Mazu statue from the Meizhou ancestral temple to Luodong. With local support, the temple was constructed in 1837, serving as a spiritual center for early settlers.  Architectural Features The temple’s structure comprises three main sections: • Front Hall (三川殿): Featuring intricate carvings by artisan Huang Wangtu, this section sets the tone for the temple’s artistic ambiance. • Main Hall (正殿): Dedicated to Mazu, the central deity, this hall is the focal point of worship and ceremonies. • Rear Hall (後殿): This two-story structure houses a shrine to Guanyin (the Goddess of Mercy) on the upper level. Notably, the rear hall’s waterwheel wall is adorned with eight clay sculptures of Western figures dressed in suits, reflecting a blend of cultural influences. Cultural Significance and Activities The temple plays a vital role in the spiritual life of residents across four townships: Luodong, Wujie, Dongshan, and Sanxing. Each year, on the 23rd day of the third lunar month, devotees celebrate Mazu’s birthday with grand processions through these areas, reflecting deep-rooted traditions and community bonds.
