From the square, the grand white marble arch stood majestically, with the vibrant scenery of Rua Augusta stretching out behind it. 🏛️ A Monument Symbolizing Lisbon's Revival This arch was built as a symbol of the city's reconstruction after the devastating 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The construction took decades and was completed in 1873. At the top, there are statues of a goddess personifying Lisbon and Portuguese heroes such as Vasco da Gama and the Marquis of Pombal, symbolizing the nation's revival and reconstruction. Upon closer inspection, each sculpture is intricately detailed, showcasing exceptional artistic craftsmanship. 🚶 The Lively Rua Augusta Passing through the arch leads directly to Rua Augusta.
