The "Convent of Ordem do Carmo" was built in 1389 by General João I Pereira, who led his troops to defeat the army of the Kingdom of Castilla (ensuring the independence of Portugal). The unique "open-air dome" was built because of the 9.0 magnitude Lisbon earthquake on November 1, 1755, which reduced the monastery to ruins.
