The elevator was built at the end of the 19th century and was designed by Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard, an engineer who had once been a student of Gustave Eiffel. The elevator's neo-Gothic exterior features carved metal details reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower. If you take the elevator, you will actually reach a high viewing platform first. The platform is connected to the other end of the sky bridge and leads directly to Carmo Square.
