Ancient church in Lisbon

#VisitHistoricSite Lisbon Cathedral or Sé de Lisboa is the main cathedral of Lisbon. It was built around 1150 on the site of the former Great Mosque of the Moors after Christian warriors recaptured Lisbon during the Second Crusade. Because it was built during the period of war between Christians and Moors in the Iberian Peninsula (Reconquista period), this cathedral looks like a fortress with tall towers flanking the entrance on both sides. The top of the wall is a rampart so that it can be used as a base to attack enemies when under siege, just like many other churches in Portugal. After many eras and constructions, Lisbon Cathedral is a mix of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Unfortunately, many parts were destroyed in the major earthquake in 1755, but it has been carefully restored. Some parts, such as the Cloister, still have some traces of ruin. The visit is divided into the following sections: ➡️ Cathedral ➡️ Cloister This section contains ancient ruins that have been excavated, such as buildings from the Visigoth and Roman eras, the remains of an old Moorish mosque, and the tombs of ancient warriors and princesses.
