You may not find Yecheng on today's map of China, but it is a real ancient capital of the Six Dynasties, which ruled northern China for 400 years. With the burning of the city by Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty, Yang Jian, in 580 AD, Yecheng disappeared in the smoke of history. The ruins of Yecheng, located in Linzhang County, Handan City, Hebei Province, are the ruins of the capitals of Cao Wei, Later Zhao, Ran Wei, Former Yan, Eastern Wei, and Northern Qi. This was the political stage where Cao Cao sang “Drinking and singing, what is life?”, and now only the ruins of the Bronze Sparrow Tower are left. This place was once the Buddhist center of the Northern Qi Dynasty. In 2012, a Buddhist statue burial pit was excavated in Beiwu Village, Xiwen Township, Linzhang County. Various Buddhist statues were unearthed, spanning from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty, especially statues from the Northern Wei, Eastern Wei and Northern Qi Dynasty. We were lucky because the Yecheng Archaeological Museum had been closed recently due to heavy rain and floods. It had just reopened the day before we arrived. The exhibits here far exceeded my expectations, they are so exquisite. Moreover, there is almost no one in the entire museum, so you can turn back the clock 1,500 years and quietly appreciate these unparalleled masterpieces without being disturbed! Yecheng Archaeological Museum, YYDS! 🌟Highlights: Among the cultural relics unearthed in Beiwu Village, there are the stupa of the Northern Qi Dynasty, the Sakyamuni statue made by Tan Fu of the Northern Wei Dynasty, the Maitreya statue made by Nong Nu in the fifth year of Wuding in the Eastern Wei Dynasty, the three lion statues of Siwei Bodhisattva and so on, which are exquisite and unparalleled, and are the best works of the Yecheng style of Buddhist statues in the Middle Ages. It is also important to note that most of these Buddhist statues were created during the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi dynasties.
