In order to "strictly monitor the night watches and observe the enemy from afar", report time and send alarms, this 100-foot-high night watchtower was built with the remaining wood from city wall repairs. It was originally named "Yumu Tower" and also known as "Drum Tower". In the ninth year of the Hongzhi reign of the Ming Dynasty (1496), Li Zan, the Deputy Director of the Ministry of Personnel, saw that the tower was tall, so he named it "Guangyue Tower" because "it is close to Lu and has light on Mount Tai". The majestic grandeur of Guangyue Tower attracts countless tourists to come and see it. Many emperors, generals, literati and scholars who pass by Liaocheng would climb up Guangyue Tower to lean on the railing to chant the moon and compose poems. More than 120 poems and essays praising Guangyue Tower are recorded in the "Dongchang Prefecture Chronicle", "Liaocheng County Chronicle" and existing inscriptions. Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty climbed the tower four times, and Emperor Qianlong visited Dongchang nine times and climbed the tower five times, writing 13 poems in total. The architectural structure of Guangyue Tower is ingenious. The four-story main building does not use a single iron nail and is entirely made of wood. Guangyue Tower is located in the center of the ancient city of Liaocheng, Shandong. It has been standing for more than 600 years and still stands tall. Despite several earthquakes over the past 600 years, it has not suffered any damage. Therefore, Guangyue Tower also enjoys the reputation of "even Huanghe and Yueyang should look up to it". Guangyue Tower is the largest existing Ming Dynasty pavilion building in my country. It is also a representative work of the transition from Song and Yuan architecture to Ming and Qing architecture, and it holds an important position in the history of ancient Chinese architecture. In 1988, Guangyue Tower was listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit.
