The Potala Palace, perched on the Red Hill, is absolutely stunning! Covering over 360,000 square meters with more than 1,000 rooms, this palace was once the residence of Tibet’s spiritual and worldly leader, the Dalai Lama. Imagine the level of faith required for a spiritual leader to also govern the land! Temples and monasteries are abundant throughout the country, with monks (Lamas) and nuns residing in them. You can often witness devotees performing the "Ashtanga Pradakshina," a gesture of utmost reverence where the body touches the ground in eight points (almost lying flat). Some even perform this gesture with every step they take. The Himalayas, snow-capped year-round, are truly magnificent. Towering high above the clouds, they offer breathtaking views, especially when standing face-to-face with Mount Everest. At night, Everest glimmers under the starlit sky, and at dawn, it radiates with the morning sun—a sight that leaves you in awe. Sacred lakes are vast and stunning, with turquoise waters that are simply mesmerizing. Iconic Tibetan animals like yaks and Tibetan mastiffs are adorable and endearing. The Roof of the World Railway offers scenic views of snowy mountains, glaciers, and lakes, beautifully narrating the story of Tibet. The beds are comfortable, though sometimes the journey can feel a bit uneventful due to the lack of activities. Most of the food is Chinese cuisine, known for its meticulous preparation and delicious flavors. Many dishes feature yak meat, which might make you feel a bit sorry for the animal, considering it provides milk, labor, wool for carpets and clothing, and is also consumed as food. Traveling to Tibet is not as challenging as you might think. Roads leading to rural areas are now much improved, so you don’t necessarily need to trek to explore Tibet. And that’s the essence of Tibet: "The embrace of the Himalayas, the breath of the mountains, the land of faith on the Roof of the World."
