Barkhor Street, also known as Bajiao Street, is located in Chengguan District, Lhasa, Tibet. In Tibetan, "Barkhor" means "circumambulation path." Barkhor Street is considered the "living fossil" of Lhasa's ancient city, preserving the traditional Tibetan street layout in its entirety. As you stroll along, the handcrafted bluestone pavement beneath your feet, worn smooth and textured by time, tells a story of millennia. On both sides of the street stand century-old Tibetan houses, with intricately carved wooden windows, yellow mud walls, and stone slab roofs that exude a rich ethnic charm. At the center of the circumambulation path, a giant bronze incense burner emits smoke day and night. Devotees throw pine branches into the burner, creating a scene where curling smoke mingles with the glow of butter lamps. Tibetan-style shops line both sides of the street, offering a dazzling array of items such as colorful Thangkas, gilded Buddha statues, and handwoven aprons called Bangdian. Each item carries the warmth of the artisan's touch. Visitors are advised to explore between 7-9 AM to avoid crowds; during this time, the mingling of pilgrims and morning mist offers the most authentic glimpse of local life. ⚠️Important Notes: - Walk clockwise; do not walk counterclockwise. - Many Tibetan courtyards are private residences; please seek permission before taking photos. - Carry personal identification, as there is 24-hour security screening at Jokhang Temple Square. 🚌Public Transportation: Take bus routes 7, 8, or 20 to Cemenlin Station, then walk straight along Danjielin Road to reach the destination.
