Drepung Monastery is one of the six major monasteries of the Gelug sect. Located on the southern slope of Gambo Utse Mountain in the western suburbs of Lhasa, it was founded in 1416 and is the largest of the three major monasteries in Lhasa. In Tibetan, Drepung means 'heap of rice', symbolizing prosperity. The monastery is vast, with clusters of white buildings spread across the mountainside, resembling a giant heap of rice from a distance, hence the name Drepung Monastery. It takes about 30 minutes by car from the Lhasa Lagari Snow Dragon Manor Resort to reach the monastery, with a Didi fare of around 50 yuan. You can walk around the monastery and the surrounding hillside. Spending a day here is also a very good choice.
