La Coruña, Spain

La Coruña is a port city in the Galicia region of Spain, bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Founded in the ancient Roman period, the city's name comes from the ancient Roman settlement. The Eracles Lighthouse, listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site, is nearly 2,000 years old and is still in use today. In the Middle Ages, the city was an important port and a center of the textile industry. In 1588, the Spanish Armada set sail from the nearby port of Fillol. In January 1809, the Battle of La Coruña, an important battle against Napoleon's rule during the Spanish War of Independence, broke out here. Sir John Moore, a British allied general in Spain, was killed in the battle and buried in San Carlos Park.
