Kyoto, an ancient city with over a thousand years of history, was once the home of the Japanese royal family before Tokyo became the capital.
Its streets and architecture are influenced by the architectural styles of the Tang Dynasty, retaining an ancient charm. Key areas include the Higashiyama District, with its spiritual temples, shrines, and altars, and the elegant Arashiyama area. Essential experiences in Kyoto include tasting traditional delicacies, walking flower-lined paths, and watching a captivating geisha show.

My second
My second Nara Line destination is Tohokuji Station.
Actually, I got off on a different train, not the Nara Line...
But it's right next to Kyoto Station on the Nara Line, so it doesn't matter which one you take!
Anyway, I got off at Tohokuji Station in a hurry, taking my mom with me!!! I debated whether to wait for another train, but since there didn't seem to be anyone around, I left the station. I heard there was a temple nearby, so I just followed the signs and walked. The temple is called "Shogun-ji Temple," and you can visit the inner garden for 800 yen. We enjoyed our visit, but I wouldn't recommend it in the summer.
There's a stream running through the temple grounds, so there are a lot of mosquitoes. My mom and I each got bitten seven times. However, if you want to enjoy the tranquility and peace of a temple, it's well worth the price.
The garden is larger than I expected, so it's nice to wander around and admire the scenery. Beyond Shogun-ji Temple, the neighborhood itself is quiet and beautiful, so if you enjoy a leisurely stroll, you won't be disappointed. Even though we avoided the narrow alleys and walked along the wide sidewalks, Tofuku-ji Temple was a feast for the eyes. We plan to visit again the next time we're in Kyoto Station.
(For reference, we also looked down at Momoyama Station, but there's really nothing to see there, so we'll pass by. It's just a residential area, so there's really nothing to see.)
Kyoto's Higashi Honganji Temple: Life Accompanies You
On this afternoon, I was about to return to Taiwan via Osaka, so I took the morning to visit Higashi Honganji Temple. The temple offers free admission, and its vast grounds house numerous national treasures and important cultural assets. From the tiled roofs and the gilded ceilings to each pillar and even the floors, every detail showcases the exceptional craftsmanship of traditional Japanese architecture, leaving visitors in awe.
The "Goeido Hall" is particularly remarkable, known as the largest wooden structure in the world. Inside, the hall is lined with tatami mats, and the golden decorations on the ceiling and pillars symbolize Buddhist teachings. The curved rooflines and the dragon carvings above the doors are masterpieces of art, even when viewed up close.
The Amida Hall is ingeniously designed to let in natural light, creating a bright yet soft ambiance that exudes a sacred and serene atmosphere. Within the temple grounds, there are several large ginkgo trees that still bear green leaves. Visiting during the right season would undoubtedly add more charm to the experience! I later learned that Higashi Honganji is one of the few temples in Japan that does not sell amulets. Instead, it aims to guide people towards self-reflection and inner peace through the teachings of the saints and the practice of chanting Buddha's name.

The Secret Moss Garden in Kyoto
You know Kyoto: golden pagodas, vibrant gates, crowds of tourists. But I want to tell you about a different place. A place worth stepping off the bustling path and getting lost in the quiet streets of the Arashiyama district.
This is Gio-ji.
Here, there are no lines. Here, there is no hustle. There is only the whisper of leaves and the feeling that you've discovered something sacred.
Instead of bright colors, there are 50 shades of green. The entire temple, every stone, every root of the ancient trees is covered in a velvety carpet of moss. It's mesmerizing and calming at the same time.
I sat on the tatami in the main hall and listened to the silence. This is the Japan I dream of—meditative, profound, and infinitely beautiful.
Tip: Visit closer to the temple's closing time and allow yourself to be alone with this wonder.

Togetsukyo Bridge | Arashiyama
#OsakaTravel
I really love Arashiyama, especially the wooden Togetsukyo Bridge, which is over 400 years old.
Togetsukyo Bridge is a must-see landmark in Arashiyama. It offers stunning views of the natural surroundings, with a backdrop of lush green mountains and a river below. The riverside is lined with shops and food vendors.
We visited in the evening, and the weather was cool and breezy. When we reached the middle of the bridge and looked around, the composition was so harmonious and beautiful, we immediately fell in love with it. Looking down into the river, we could see rocks and fish, perhaps because the water level was low.
I regret visiting in the evening, as we didn't get to enjoy the view for long before it got dark and we had to return to Osaka. I'm sure I'll return to Arashiyama next time, and I'd love to see the autumn leaves there.

Beautiful and old streets in Kyoto
#OsakaTravel
For those planning a trip to Kyoto, I highly recommend strolling along this lively pedestrian street on a hillside, Kyoto's famous cobblestone walkway.
Sanneizaka Street lives up to its reputation. While the photos are beautiful, the real-world experience is even more stunning. We arrived around 9:00 AM from Osaka, wanting to take photos of the traditional Japanese houses and Sanneizaka Street without too many people in them.
Honestly, every photo was beautiful, and the lighting was perfect. Walking from alley to alley was a delight. It was still quiet in the morning, but around 10:00 AM, we climbed the stairs to the street leading to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and it was packed with tourists even before the shops even opened. It was truly lively.

I fell in love with this city, Arashiyama | Kyoto
#TravelChat
Arashiyama: Arashiyama, Kyoto. Anyone else love this city? I fell in love with it.
Starting from the moment I got off the train, I walked along the path and saw shops, houses, and buildings all decorated so cutely. We went in the afternoon when it wasn't sunny, so it was a relaxing walk. The weather was great, and there weren't many people.
When I reached the fork, I turned left towards Togetsukyo Bridge, and then right towards the bamboo forest. I decided to walk through the bamboo forest first. The Arashiyama Bamboo Forest wasn't impressive at all, it was just average, so I walked back the same way, back down towards Togetsukyo Bridge.
I really like this side of the road. There's a river, cafes, places to sit, and the breeze is cool and the view is so beautiful. I didn't want to leave. So many people were out relaxing, strolling, and relaxing. I'd love to go back.

☕ % Arabica Arashiyama
#TravelChat 📍 % Arabica's Arashiyama branch is located along the Hozu River, a popular tourist area in Kyoto. Its distinctive feature is its views of both the mountains and the river. The atmosphere is peaceful, yet bustling with tourists. The interior is decorated in a clean, minimalist style, a signature of % Arabica, making every corner photogenic. 📷
A recommended menu item is definitely the rich, aromatic, and well-balanced latte. For non-coffee drinkers, there's also a smooth matcha latte. The flavors are simple, but the quality is outstanding. The price is a bit premium, but the view and the quality of the coffee are worth it. It's a truly special experience, especially if you're strolling along the river in Arashiyama with your coffee cup in hand. ✨
⛩️ Tens of thousands of torii gates that you must visit @Kyoto
#TravelChat Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine is another must-see landmark in Kyoto. The highlight is the tens of thousands of red torii gates lining the path up Mount Inari. Walking under them, you'll experience a traditional Japanese atmosphere that's both sacred and magnificent. 🌸
We took the Keihan Line to Fushimi-Inari Station, and then walked just a few minutes to the shrine. Furthermore, there's no entrance fee, so anyone can stop by to pray and take photos.
We didn't walk all the way, but the path was lined with beautiful torii gates, creating a stunning photo opportunity no matter which way you turn. I recommend arriving early for photos without crowds, as even on weekdays, it's still quite crowded.
The tranquil atmosphere, combined with the bustling atmosphere of tourists, was a truly memorable experience. Anyone visiting Kyoto should definitely bookmark this place. 🦊✨

THOUSAND TORII GATES
This place was one of the best if not the best memories of my Japan trip, it is a very unique scenery and a great hike, the fact you hike the entire time surrounded by Tori gates is so cool, I’m glad their in such good condition and I’m surprised that they built so many of them.
You don’t need to book anything and you can just walk right in and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, I also got some really nice sunset views and liked being on the trail.
Some parts had lots of people but I found that we were practically alone for the majority of it. If your ever in Kyoto or visit Japan, this is a must see.
SHIMOGAMO SHRINE
A 2000 year old temple who doesn't have an entrance fee. Walking towards the temple, the different shades of green of the trees greet you.
The temple was not busy, seemed to be off the beaten path, definitely worth a visit.
We spent half of the day just walking and admiring the beauty and history of the shrine.

GOOD COFFEE IN A CUTE CAFÉ.
Tucked away in Tokyo, SOT Coffee is a cozy café with a real focus on quality beans and creative drinks.
☕️ What We Ordered
I tried an iced Americano made with light roast beans from Colombia—bright and balanced. We also had their Choco Nuts Latte with oat milk, which comes with Nutella and crushed nuts around the rim of the glass. It was indulgent but not overly sweet—a really nice combo if you’re in the mood for a treat.
🪑 Ambience & Space
The vibe is relaxed and minimalist, but do note it’s quite a small space. There are three tables on a tatami area (seats about 6), and four more next to the counter for another 8 people—so a total of around 14 seats. It might not be the best spot for lingering during busy times, but it’s perfect for a quality coffee break.
💳 Good to Know
Credit card payment is accepted, which is always a plus in smaller cafés around Japan.
THE PLACE TO TRY CHARCOAL EEL.
Charcoal eel are perfectly cooked and very Japanese authentic. The size of the eel is super and serving is average with the price. Super yummy and not very sweet.
The egg with eel is very good. The side dish also have eel. Their complimentary entre deep fried eel bone is just perfect.
Everything are not oily and cooked to perfection. The staff are super friendly. Environment is very pretty too. Very easy access.
A CAFÉ WITH FRIENDLY STAFF.
We love stumbling upon this cafe.
We visited for breakfast 3 days out of our 4 days trip to Kyoto.
The service was always so friendly & efficient.
The breakfast is amazing and fills you up all day long.
A place for great coffee and breakfast or brunch.
The atmosphere of the café is welcoming. The staff are friendly and helpful.

KIFUNE SHRINE IN KYOTO.
Kifune Shrine is hands down the most memorable and meaningful place I visited during my winter trip to Kyoto. Nestled halfway up a mountain and surrounded by dense forest, the shrine offers an incredibly fresh and peaceful atmosphere that feels far removed from the busy tourist sites in central Kyoto.
Getting there isn’t the easiest—it requires taking the subway and then two buses from the city center—but that’s exactly what makes this place so special. Because of the more challenging access, it’s not crowded with international tourists, especially large tour groups from China, which unfortunately tend to overwhelm many other Kyoto landmarks and often leave behind trash. In contrast, Kifune Shrine remains pristine and uncrowded, preserving its natural beauty and serenity.
Even in winter, the landscape here is breathtaking. A small, crystal-clear stream runs down from the mountain right next to the shrine, adding to the peaceful, sacred atmosphere. The locals clearly take great care of the environment, and everything feels clean and well-respected.
