Kyoto Rokkakudo: A Realm of Early Cherry Blossoms in the Heart of Kyoto

In the heart of Kyoto lies a place full of ancient charm and romantic atmosphere - Rokkakudo. It is said that Rokkakudo was founded by Prince Shotoku in the 2nd year of Emperor Yomei's reign (587). Its official name is 'Choho-ji,' but it is called Rokkakudo because the building is hexagonal in shape. The six angles refer to the six desires of the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind. If one can abandon these six desires, they can achieve a state of purity. During the Muromachi period, the head priests of Rokkakudo, Ikenobo Senkei and Senyo, established the theory of Ikebana (flower arranging) through the offering of flowers, exploring profound life philosophies through their external forms. This process gradually established the Ikenobo school as the leading school of Ikebana. To this day, the head of the Ikenobo school still serves as the head priest of Rokkakudo, holding the position of the head of the largest Ikebana school in Japan, and passing it down through generations. Since ancient times, the blooming of cherry blossoms at Rokkakudo has been seen as a symbol of spring arriving in Kyoto. The temple cultivates a unique variety of cherry blossoms called Miyuki zakura. This variety starts off white at the beginning of its bloom and gradually turns pale pink, a characteristic unique to it. The temple grounds of Rokkakudo are not large, and one could probably tour the buildings in about five minutes. However, during cherry blossom season, there is much more to see. ➡️ Willow Tree: It is said that in the early Heian period, Emperor Saga was troubled about choosing a wife. One day, the Kannon of Rokkakudo appeared in his dream and told him that the person he was looking for would appear under the willow tree at Rokkakudo. Surprisingly, the emperor had a beautiful encounter under the willow tree. Thus, the willow tree at Rokkakudo is also known as the 'Willow of Fate.' In spring, the pink and white cherry blossoms contrast with the fresh green willow tree, creating a picturesque scene. ➡️ Jizo: The temple dresses the Jizo statues in red aprons and knitted hats. It is said that these Jizo statues specifically protect children. ➡️ Pigeons: You can write your wishes and place them in pigeon-shaped objects, then place them at a height above your eye level at home. It is said to bring good luck. ➡️ Starbucks: This might be one of the most pleasant places to enjoy cherry blossoms in Kyoto.
