Kinkaku-ji was originally the Kitayama Palace, rebuilt by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1397. After his death, it was converted into a Zen Buddhist temple according to his wishes and named Rokuon-ji after his posthumous name. Rokuon-ji is commonly known as Kinkaku-ji due to the fame of the Golden Pavilion. The pavilion is three stories high, with the top two stories covered in 200,000 gold leaf pieces, giving it a dazzling appearance! It has been destroyed twice, once by arson committed by a monk, and was rebuilt in 1955. The reflection of the pavilion on the lake is stunning, and the garden design is also worth appreciating.
