Bacheng Old Street was built during the Guangxu period of the Qing dynasty. It stretches 200 meters from east to west, with a narrow street that only allows three people to walk side by side. To make full use of the space, the eaves of the residential houses and shops on both sides protrude towards the middle, making the old street appear even narrower. Hence, Bacheng Old Street is also nicknamed 'One-Line Sky'. The old houses on the street are built along the river, with the front facing the street and the back resting on the river, closely arranged in an orderly fashion. The walls are whitewashed, and the tiles are dark grey; the stone banks are mottled, and the river wharfs are scattered in a picturesque manner. The water of the Shihe River (Yanglintang) is clear and cool, with boats shuttling back and forth, presenting a typical scene of the water towns in the south of the Yangtze River. The pedestrian path of the old street (stone slab street) is quite narrow, and the buildings of the residents and shops on both sides jut out into the street. If you open a window, you can shake hands with someone across the street.
