Green Lake Park, Kunming

Green Lake Park is located in the center of Kunming, Yunnan Province, at the west foot of Wuhua Mountain. It covers an area of 0.216 square kilometers, of which the land area is about 0.06 square kilometers, the water area is about 0.123 square kilometers, and the volume is 151,000 cubic meters. It is an ellipse 675 meters long and 500 meters wide. Green Lake Park faces Biji Mountain in the south and is adjacent to the Yunnan Science and Technology Museum. It overlooks Snake Mountain in the north and is adjacent to Yunnan University. It is connected to the former site of the Yunnan Military Academy in the southwest. Green Lake Park is surrounded by water and bamboo all year round, and willows in spring and summer, hence the name "Green Lake". The park has a long history and profound cultural heritage, and is known as the "Emerald" of Spring City. At the end of the Yuan Dynasty, it was called "Caihaizi", and because there were "nine springs in the northeast of the lake, which converged into a pool", it was also called "Jiulong Pool". In the Ming Dynasty, Mu Ying "planted willows and herded horses" in Green Lake, and in the Qing Dynasty, Wu Sangui changed it into a new mansion "Honghua Mansion". In the 31st year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1692), Wang Jiwen, the governor of Yunnan, built the "Biyi Pavilion" on the island in the center of the lake, and it became a scenic spot. In the 15th year of the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty (1835), Ruan Yuan, the governor of Yunnan and Guizhou, built a long embankment running north-south, named "Ruan Embankment". In the eighth year of the Republic of China (1919), Tang Jiyao built a long embankment running east-west, named "Tang Embankment". The two embankments intersected at the island in the center of the lake, dividing the lake into four parts. Green Lake Park is composed of scenic spots such as Shuiyue Pavilion, Haixin Pavilion, Jiulong Pool, Guanyu Building, Lianhua Zen Temple, Southwest Island, and Bamboo Island, with the scenic features of "ten acres of lotus flowers and fish world, half a city of willows and Buddhist buildings".
