Green elegance: Take a stroll at the foot of Kumamoto Castle!

Kumamoto Castle is a place that quietly takes your breath away—not because of its grandeur, but due to its serene elegance, lush greenery, and the tranquil atmosphere that flows through every stone path and shaded bench. Surrounded by towering trees and expansive lawns, the castle area feels like a peaceful oasis, separated from the bustling city. Although the main castle is still undergoing restoration, its historical charm remains undiminished. Witnessing the scaffolding and ongoing construction gives you a sense of being part of history as it is slowly rebuilt. At the foot of the castle, there’s a small local food street offering delights such as my favorite steamed meat buns, spicy mustard lotus root, and ice cream made with local ingredients. Though modest in size, it exudes warmth and provides a taste of Kumamoto’s local flavors. My personal favorite is the tranquil canal walkway nearby. The water is as calm as a mirror, flanked by old stone walls and shaded trees, making it perfect for a quiet stroll or a moment to slow down and reflect during your journey. A quick reminder: The castle’s interior closes promptly at 4 PM, and the entire park shuts down at 5 PM. If you arrive too late, you’ll only be able to admire the exterior and won’t have access to the main building or observation areas. It’s best to visit early to fully experience the charm of this ancient castle.
