Heisenji Hakusan Shrine in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture, is said to have been a major medieval city with approximately 6,000 monks and 8,000 warrior monks within its 1km square grounds, which served as the base of the Hakusan faith on the Echizen side of the country. By the way, it was known as Hakusan Heisenji even before the Meiji era's Shinbutsu Bunri-rei (law to separate Shinto and Buddhism), and it still has a second name today.
