Kangding Chronicles: More Than Just a Transit Stop of Fireworks and Poetry

Many people say Kangding is merely a "rest stop" for traveling in Western Sichuan, but when I truly set foot in this small town, I discovered it holds so much underestimated beauty. If you're planning a trip to Western Sichuan, make sure to reserve a day for Kangding, allowing its street-side charm and poetic atmosphere carried by the wind to gently embrace you. My journey in Kangding began at the Love Song Square in the early morning. As dawn broke, the square was filled with the melodious sound of Tibetan songs, and a group of locals dressed in traditional Tibetan attire danced the Guozhuang dance in a circle. Their steps were light yet firm, their arms gracefully swaying to the rhythm, and their faces radiated natural smiles. I couldn't resist standing aside and trying to mimic their movements, my clumsy attempts drawing kind laughter from a nearby elder. She took my hand and led me into the circle. At that moment, there was no sense of unfamiliarity—only music, dance, and the warmth shared among us. The coolness of the highland morning was completely dispelled by the lively atmosphere. Walking deeper into the square, I arrived at Liuliu City. The cobblestone paths, polished smooth by time, were flanked by Tibetan-style watchtowers scattered in an orderly fashion. Their walls were adorned with vibrant murals, and prayer flags fluttered under the eaves, producing a "clattering" sound. Here, you can find shops selling Tibetan-style accessories alongside trendy coffee shops, creating a fascinating blend of tradition and modernity. The most photogenic spot is undoubtedly the "Liuliu City" archway. Standing beneath it, you can look up to see blue skies and white clouds, or look down to see the stone path stretching into the distance—every snapshot tells a story. Venturing into the nearby alleys reveals the authentic local life: elderly women sunning butter at their doorsteps, young men carrying barley wine, and children chasing each other with sugar paintings in hand. Every scene is vivid and lively. Continuing along the streets and alleys, the sound of the Zheduo River becomes increasingly clear. Anjue Temple is situated by the riverbank, standing out as the only Gelugpa monastery in Kangding's urban area. Its red walls and golden roof gleam brightly under the sunlight, and the prayer wheels at the entrance shine from the touch of devoted believers. Inside the temple, the air is filled with incense smoke, and the faint sound of chanting creates an atmosphere of solemnity. Here, you don't need to do anything special—just standing quietly for a while, absorbing the unique tranquility and reverence, can bring a moment of peace to your soul. In the evening, strolling along the Zheduo River is the most delightful activity. The river flows clear and swiftly, reflecting shimmering waves under the sunset. The willow trees along the banks sway gently in the breeze, and occasionally, birds skim across the water's surface. As the lights on both sides of the river gradually illuminate, the Tibetan-style street lamps add a touch of warmth and romance to the streets. When I reached the Kangding Post Office, I couldn't resist stepping inside. Though small, the post office exudes a sense of human connection, with walls covered in postcards from visitors around the world and shelves filled with Tibetan-themed souvenirs and specialties. I picked out a few postcards featuring Kangding's scenery, carefully wrote down my blessings, stamped them with the exclusive postmark, and sent them to friends and family far away, sharing the beauty of Kangding with them. After a day of exploration, hunger had set in, and a hearty yak hotpot was the perfect remedy. The yak meat was tender and firm, paired with local vegetables and dipped in a special sauce—it was utterly satisfying. Don't forget to order a bowl of Tibetan-style yogurt, drizzled with honey and butter; its sweet and tangy richness instantly refreshes the palate. Finally, a pot of warm butter tea completes the meal, its savory flavor sliding down the throat and warming the entire body. As night fell, the lights of Rainbow Bridge sparkled brilliantly, and the bridge was crowded with people admiring the night view. Standing on the bridge and gazing out, the illuminated banks of the Zheduo River made the entire Kangding city look like a painting. I realized that Kangding's beauty is never confined to a specific attraction but is hidden in every unassuming moment—in the smiles of locals, the aroma of food, and the gentle evening breeze.
