However, in summer, the lotus ponds surrounding the shrine bring lush greenery, and the swaying lotus flowers seem to greet visitors coming to pay their respects. If you visit during summer, you can experience the seasonal "Chinowa" ritual, part of the unique "Oharai" purification ceremony. By walking in a figure-eight pattern through the Chinowa ring, you can cleanse yourself of misfortunes and sins accumulated over the past six months. Both the main shrine and the lower Wakamiya shrine have been designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Their architectural style is fascinating, combining elements of Hachiman-zukuri and Nagare-zukuri.
