The Wanfo Pagoda has a long history, dating back to the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127), nearly a thousand years ago. How did the Wanfo Pagoda get its name? As the name suggests, the pagoda is carved with statues of the Buddha, hence the name. The underground palace displays the cultural relics unearthed from the underground palace of the Wanfo Temple in the past, most of which are statues of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Most of them are small in size, with delicate carvings and a strong Jiangnan style. If you are interested in Buddhist statues, you may want to spend more time in the underground palace. Take the elevator directly to the 15th floor of the Wanfo Pagoda. When you get out of the elevator, you will see a giant bronze bell sitting on the top of the pagoda. You can enjoy the scenery of Jinhua City from the railing. The Dongyang River, the ancient city of Wuzhou, the Hongji Bridge, and the Chisong Gate are all in sight. These city landmarks are like the flesh and bones of a giant, with their own rules and order. The magnificence of the city is breathtaking. The Wanfo Pagoda we are climbing now is no longer the original Song Dynasty relic, but a new pagoda, and its location is no longer the original site. From 1937 to 1942, the Japanese army launched large-scale land and air attacks on Jinhua. The Japanese army used the Wanfo Pagoda, the highest point in Jinhua City (originally located in the northwest corner of the ancient city of Wuzhou), as a coordinate to launch precise attacks on Jinhua, posing a great threat to the safety of the military and civilians in the city. In order to reduce the casualties caused by the air raids, the local garrison had to dismantle the thousand-year-old pagoda. It was not until 2014 that the Wanfo Pagoda was relocated and rebuilt, and it was officially opened to the public in 2019.
