The first two times were earthen cities, and it was not until the third time that Chongqing had a stone city wall. Hongya Cave is a natural cliff cave. Its waterfall landscape was once one of the twelve scenic spots in Bayu, named "Hongya Dicui". A city gate, Hongya Gate, was built at the location of Hongya Cave. The Hongyadong Folk Customs Area was designated as one of Chongqing's eight "people-oriented projects" in 2005. It was invested and built by Chongqing Little Swan Group and officially opened on September 29, 2006. The folk customs area did not perform well in its initial stage of construction, with losses of millions of yuan almost every month in the early days of its opening.
