Luzhong Ancient Town

Historical Origin Luzhong Ancient Town was formed during the Three Kingdoms period, originally named Daishang. It was named after the famous Eastern Wu general Lu Xun who stationed troops here, leading to gradual commercial prosperity. During the Tang Dynasty, the Lu, Zhong, and Mao families opened their granaries to relieve famine but died of starvation. In gratitude, the locals renamed the place "Luzhongmao," later shortened to Luzhong. Geographical Location Luzhong Ancient Town is located about 7 kilometers northwest of Xiashi, Haining, and 3.3 kilometers north of Qingyun Bridge in Xieqiao Town, bordering Tongxiang City to the north. The ancient town centers around Deyi Bridge, stretching about 150 meters north to south and 300 meters east to west, covering an area of approximately 4.5 hectares. Ancient Town Scenery Luzhong Ancient Town is a typical water town in Jiangnan, surrounded by water on all sides, with Luzhong Port (Tingxi) running north to south through the town. Along the riverbank are ancient wharfs and distinctive water pavilion houses built over the water. The east-west Luzhong Straight Street is paved with stone slabs, with connected street-facing shops retaining the layout from the late Qing and early Republic periods. Traces of old salt shops, oil mills, and rice stores can still be faintly seen. Cultural Attractions The ancient town has produced many historical figures, including Song Dynasty female poet Zhu Shuzhen, Ming Dynasty Ministry of Rites Vice Minister Wu Taichong, modern botanist Qian Chongshu, and painter Qian Juntao. The town has three Haining city-level cultural protection units, including Defeng Bridge, Deyi Bridge, and Qian Juntao’s ancestral home, as well as six other protected sites such as Zhu Shuzhen’s former residence and Zhang Zixiang’s house. Current Status and Features Luzhong Ancient Town remains uncommercialized, preserving its original rustic charm. Many old houses are still inhabited by elderly residents, giving the town a strong sense of daily life.
