Xitang

Xitang Ancient Town is located in Jiaxing, Zhejiang. It is an ancient and tranquil town with the typical characteristics of a Jiangnan water town. Xitang has a history of over 1,000 years. According to legend, during the Spring and Autumn Period, Wu Zixu of the State of Wu developed water conservancy projects, opened up canals, and dug Wuzitang, which led water from Xushan (12 li southwest of present-day Jiashan County) to the town. Therefore, Xitang is also known as Xutang. Due to its flat terrain, Xitang is also known as Pingchuan or Xietang. During the Kaiyuan period of the Tang Dynasty, many villages were built, with houses built along the river. During the Southern Song Dynasty, the villages gradually took shape and formed a market. During the Yuan Dynasty, the town gradually developed into a market town, and commerce began to flourish. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it developed into a major center of handicrafts and commerce in Jiangnan. Today, many local residents still live in the ancient town, and there are many unique homestays. The night market and bars along the river are very lively at night.
