2024 Istanbul Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in November)
As a city that cradles both Asian and European cultures, Istanbul has innumerable stories to count. Sitting at the throat of the Bosphorus Strait, this city is at the confluence of eastern and western culture. Previously, three ancient empires—the Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans—made this their capital city, previously known as Constantinople and Byzantium. An abundance of ancient relics and structures each culture left behind have been preserved. In the old Sultanahmet District you can see magnificent Blue Mosque and, in the same visit, go to the nearby Hagia Sophia—a Greek Orthodox church that became a mosque and is now a museum)—and the Ottoman-era Topkapı Palace. The century-old Grand Bazaar is a spectacle not to be missed. The goods inside are dazzling to behold and it is a good place to buy souvenirs.

Pera Palace Afternoon Tea🫖|Full Relaxation~
Pera Palace is a renowned century-old hotel in Istanbul, with its origins tied to the 'Orient Express.' It is also the inspiration behind the globally famous 'Murder on the Orient Express.' Even if you can't stay here, having an afternoon tea is a great experience❤️
The Kubbeli Saloon Tea Lounge in the lobby is famous for its traditional English afternoon tea, rich in nostalgic charm. You can enjoy the delightful piano performance while sipping tea and savoring sweet Turkish desserts🍧, feeling completely relaxed~
There's also Turkey's first wooden and wrought iron elevator here, which I absolutely love. Although it's now only for display and not for use, those who have watched the series 'Midnight at the Pera Palace' might recognize it. The main character travels back in time to the early 20th century hotel scene, and this elevator was featured and still operational back then.
In short, if you're traveling to Turkey, don't miss out on having an afternoon tea at Pera Palace🫖. Highly recommended❤️

Istanbul | My "life" should be wasted here.
Let's take a look at the "capital of the world" in Napoleon's mouth
I have summarized these beautiful scenic spots that are so beautiful that the shutter can't stop. Don't miss it
·
1️⃣Galata tower: The highest point in Istanbul, you can overlook the beautiful scenery of the entire city. I came here in the evening, and I saw the red and orange sunset on one side, and the Galata Bridge on the other side slowly became clear in the night. It was particularly dreamy. . You can also see many roads, crowds, and strait cruise ships from a high perspective, and you can really feel the chill of Istanbul~
-
2️⃣Bosphorus Strait Ferry: The very worthwhile Bosphorus Strait Ferry can visit the scenery of both sides of Istanbul in all directions for 90 minutes. It is so beautiful to visit the sea in the sea breeze~
-
3️⃣Seven Hills: This is really knocking out the film! The rooftop can see the Blue Mosque & Hagia Sophia at the same time. It is free to feed the seagulls and take pictures on the rooftop. The staff have a good attitude and the seagulls cooperate~ Because I like it too much, I stayed on the second floor for another meal
-
4️⃣Blue Mosque: A representative work of Byzantine architectural art, the blue tiles and spectacular dome are very beautiful. Please note that you need to respect etiquette when entering here. Women need to wear headscarves, long sleeves and trousers or long skirts
-
5️⃣Dolmabahce Palace: The new palace faces the Bosphorus Strait, surrounded by the blue sea, the white European architecture is very luxurious, and the interior is even more amazing, it really opens up the horizon!
Turkish hospitality is the best 🥩🍔
#hospitality
My recent trip to Istanbul was nothing short of amazing, but what truly stood out was the famous Turkish hospitality. From the moment I landed, I was met with warm smiles and welcoming gestures. Staying in the Sultanahmet district, I felt like I was transported back in time with its historic mosques and palaces nearby. Every café I walked into, I was greeted with complimentary Turkish tea (çay) and sweets. The locals were eager to share stories and help me find the best spots to visit. No entrance fee required—just pure hospitality! ☕🇹🇷
One of the highlights was visiting a traditional Turkish restaurant where the owner, Mehmet, sat down with us after the meal to share more tea and ask about our journey. This personal touch made me feel like I was visiting family. The Grand Bazaar and Hagia Sophia are both within walking distance, so you can soak in history and culture all day long.
In Istanbul, the hospitality is as rich as the city’s history, and I left with new friends and unforgettable memories. Can’t wait to return!

Istanbul's Stunning Cityscape from Galata Tower
#cityscape #100waysoftravel #turkiye #turkey #istanbul #galatatower
One of the best ways to experience the breathtaking cityscape of Istanbul is from the top of the iconic Galata Tower. Standing tall in the Beyoğlu district, this medieval stone structure offers a panoramic view of the city's rich blend of history and modernity. From the tower's viewing platform, you can see the shimmering Bosphorus, the Golden Horn, and the sprawling skyline dotted with domes and minarets. However, be prepared for long queues—waiting almost two hours to take the lift is common, especially during peak times. Despite the wait, the stunning view from the top makes it all worthwhile, offering a perfect snapshot of Istanbul’s vibrant and timeless beauty.
Vibrant Places in Istanbul 🇹🇷✨
Our trip to Turkey was truly unforgettable! ❤️
We started our day with a traditional Turkish breakfast, filled with fresh 🥖 🧀 🫒 🫖 . Walking through the bustling streets of Taksim, we felt the vibrant energy of the city. The Largest Catholic Church in Istanbul ⛪️
#churches
Located on the bustling İstiklal Avenue, the Church of St. Anthony of Padua is Istanbul’s largest Roman Catholic church and one of the most stunning architectural landmarks in the city. Built in the Italian Neo-Gothic style, this historic church has been serving the local and expatriate Catholic community since the early 20th century.
The church's striking red-brick façade and intricately designed interiors, complete with beautiful stained glass windows and religious artwork, create a serene and reflective atmosphere, making it a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle. Whether you're attending a service or simply admiring its beauty, the Church of St. Anthony is a must-visit for history buffs, architecture lovers, and those seeking a quiet moment in the heart of Istanbul.

Turkey - Istanbul (1) (Kaymak, Galata Tower, Galata Bridge)
Turkey is definitely one of the best travel destinations.
Istanbul Part 1~~!
You must have Kaymak as your first meal in the morning.
Menemen as a side dish, haha.
There are many hills, so walking can be inconvenient,
but you have to walk to see Istanbul properly,
so I highly recommend wearing sneakers.
You can take pictures at Galata Tower and see many people fishing at Galata Bridge, haha.
The color of the Bosphorus Strait is really deep blue, haha.
Stunning! I was lucky enough to visit Hagia Sophia on a Sunday!
In 532 AD, Justinian I built Hagia Sophia to show off the power of the Roman Empire. Later, with the looting of the Crusades and the invasion of Islam, the Eastern Roman Empire gradually declined. Hagia Sophia was forcibly opened for the last time in 1453, marking the end of the once glorious Eastern Roman Empire. The 1,500 years of history can be condensed into a few lines, but the ambition and desire packaged in the name of God, the struggle and struggle between power, are all the same as the individual and collective destiny. "Blood splattered on its marble floor" and "They led mules and horses into the church to better transport the holy vessels." On the second floor of the cathedral, you can still see the marks left by the Crusades. Hymns and prayers, screams and cries, ceremonies and prayers, all echoed in the dome of the cathedral, but the sound did not leave a trace, they dissipated with time.
But on the wall of the second floor of the cathedral, history no longer uses text or memory as its carrier. The 1,500 years of time have been weathered and deposited, and finally exist in the form of rock formations. It is said that Justinian used some of the stone materials from Greek buildings when building the cathedral. Later, the Orthodox Church decorated the church with gold mosaics, and the broken three saints silently recorded this history.
After the fall of the church in 1453, most of the gold mosaic decorations were covered with mortar, and the most exquisite dome Madonna and Child image of the Eastern Roman period was also covered with white cloth. The gold mosaic covers the Greek stone, and the Islamic yellow mural is on it. The 1,500 years of vicissitudes are condensed on the wall of the square, which is called "stacked history".
This is a city with three names, from Byzantium to Constantinople to Istanbul. From the first time this land in the Bosphorus Bay appeared in the mist in the early morning, to the split between East and West Rome, and then to the Ottoman siege.
Prosperity is burned into ashes, and ashes breed prosperity again.
Largest and Oldest covered markets in the world! 🌍
#traveldiaries
The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world. 🌍Everything is spectacular in the Grand Bazaar, a mythical place in the Turkish metropolis where it’s easy to lose yourself and be amazed. It can be accessed through up to 22 different doors, leading to some 58 streets. It’s located in the Sultanahmet area, near the Çemberlitas and Beyazit neighbourhoods, just a short distance from the historic centre of the city and its most iconic monuments.
Hundreds of thousands of visitors come every day to explore the labyrinth of shops in this large space where you can buy anything: jewellery, carpets, items made of precious metals, fabrics, etc. It’s impossible not to be dazed by the mixture of sounds, smells, flavours, and colours that fill this magical enclave, which is famous for the haggling that takes place here.
✨Tips: haggle patiently, it's best if you have time and go from shop to shop to find the perfect piece at the best price.
💞Even if shopping is not your aim, visiting the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul can be a delightful experience as long as you’re not in a hurry and enjoy taking in the ambience of the surroundings and losing yourself. The hustle and bustle of the people, the gestures of the vendors, the reflections of the jewellery shops and the architecture of the place itself, with its domes painted blue, are reason enough to take the time to wander around.

Exploring the Timeless Majesty of Hagia Sophia: A Journey Through Byzantine Splendor
#europeanarchitecture #100waysoftravel #byzantine #hagia_sophia #turkey #turkiye #istanbul #magic_istanbul #turkeytrip #architecture
Visiting Hagia Sophia was an awe-inspiring experience, as I marveled at its magnificent blend of European Byzantine architecture.
Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the vast dome, seemingly floating above the enormous central space, an architectural marvel of its time.
The intricate mosaics, some dating back to the 6th century, showcased the exquisite artistry of the Byzantine period, with their rich gold backgrounds and religious iconography.
Massive columns and arches, adorned with elaborate detailing, reflected the merging of both Roman and Christian influences. Originally built as a cathedral by Emperor Justinian, Hagia Sophia has witnessed a remarkable transformation through history, serving as a mosque and now a museum. Its grandeur, both in scale and design, is a testament to the ingenuity and splendor of Byzantine architecture.
Being there, I could feel the deep layers of history etched into every stone and mosaic, making it one of the most memorable architectural wonders I’ve ever explored.
📌📌Arrive Early to avoid long lines and fully enjoy the peaceful atmosphere before the crowds arrive.
💃Dress Modestly, as Hagia Sophia is now a mosque again, and respectful attire is required.
‼️Don’t Miss the Mosaics on the upper gallery, as they are some of the finest examples of Byzantine art.
🕰️Take Time to Admire the Dome, a true architectural wonder of the ancient world.
🙏Check Prayer Times, as the site closes to visitors during Islamic prayer sessions.
A Spiritual Journey in Istanbul: Exploring the Beauty of the Blue Mosque
When I set foot in Istanbul, my heart was filled with anticipation. This city is truly a cultural crossroads, and what attracted me the most were undoubtedly the magnificent mosques.
First, I visited the famous Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque). As soon as I stepped inside, I was awestruck by the blue tiles and intricate domes. Sunlight streamed through the stained glass windows, making the entire space seem to sparkle. You can see worshippers praying quietly, creating a peaceful atmosphere.
Next, I visited the Hagia Sophia. The history of this building is fascinating, having transformed from a mosque to a church and back to a mosque, each change carrying its own stories. The grand dome and beautiful mosaic art inside made me constantly take out my camera to snap photos. Despite the many tourists, I could still feel the weight of history.
Lastly, I visited some smaller mosques, like the Suleymaniye Mosque. This place is relatively quiet, unlike the crowded Blue Mosque. Here, I sat down to enjoy the tranquility and ponder the stories behind these buildings, feeling particularly relaxed.
Overall, the mosque tour in Istanbul opened my eyes. Not only did I appreciate the architectural beauty, but I also felt a deep sense of culture. This trip was truly a wonderful memory! If you have the chance to visit, don't miss these amazing mosques!

A family trip to Topkapi Palace, the Imperial Residence of the Ottoman Empire
#familytravel
Istanbul is one of the most important cultural centre in Turkey considering the age of the city and the historical significance. During our trip to Istanbul, we visited the Topkapi Palace, which serves as the Imperial Residence of the Sultan on the era of Ottoman Empire. It was built by the order of Sultan Mehmed Fatih in 1459, until 1860 when the Sultans shifted its residence to Dolmabache Palace. At the end of the Ottoman Empire in 1923, the government released a decree to transform the palace to a museum. There are a total of four courtyards and a harem which serves different purposes, in which the second courtyard has a vast collections of treasures from China, Japan etc. The Imperial Council Building is also located in the second courtyard. The third courtyard houses the Harem which is also the forbidden area. It is one of the most important cultural Relic and one must visit when traveling to Istanbul.

On my summer vacation to Istanbul, visiting the Grand Bazaar was a highlight that I still can’t stop thinking about! Located in the heart of the city, this iconic market is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world. The moment you step inside, you're enveloped by a maze of over 4,000 shops, each one brimming with colorful goods—from beautiful carpets and textiles to intricate jewelry and handmade ceramics.
There’s no entrance fee, which is great because you’ll want to save your money for shopping! I found myself haggling over a gorgeous Turkish lamp and some spices that I couldn’t resist taking home. The experience of bargaining with the friendly vendors is all part of the charm.

During my summer trip to Istanbul, I visited Nusr-Et Burger and it was a fantastic experience! Located on Etiler’s Nispetiye Caddesi, this spot offers a more casual take on the famous Nusr-Et dining experience. The place is stylish and modern, with a menu centered around gourmet burgers and delicious sides.
There's no entrance fee, but be prepared to spend around €15-€25 per person, depending on what you order. I tried their signature burger, which was juicy and packed with flavor. The truffle fries were also a standout.
After your meal, you can explore nearby attractions like the upscale Zorlu Center or take a walk in the beautiful Yıldız Park. Nusr-Et Burger is a must-visit for anyone looking to enjoy high-quality burgers in a chic setting.

Is it necessary to post on social media about flying first class for a trip to Turkey?
Absolutely necessary! For those who are thinking about coming to Turkey, take a look!
The five-star luxury experience with Turkish Airlines is truly off the charts in comfort
An airborne feast with onboard wifi, highly recommended~~
This trip to Turkey included stops in Izmir, Bodrum, and of course, the capital of the world, Istanbul! Whether it's natural scenery or historical sites, it's all incredibly worthwhile~ From departure to return, it was business class with Turkish Airlines, where being well-fed and lying flat to sleep all the way to the destination was just too awesome, from free wifi to fine food and wine, a true five-star experience👍
I really have to praise this Beijing to Istanbul Turkish Airlines flight that departs in the early morning. After about ten hours of flight, you land in Istanbul just in time for a morning full of energy to start the day!
After boarding, there are welcome drinks and a menu, because it's a three-course international cuisine made on the spot by a chef, so you have to choose what you want to eat in advance. Once you've ordered, you can get ready for a beautiful flight!
The legroom in first class is spacious, and personal items can be conveniently placed in the space at your feet. Free internet access is so considerate~~ With a headphone pack, blanket, pillow, and even super practical slippers, socks, earplugs, eye mask, toothpaste, toothbrush, and lip balm, the flight becomes even more comfortable.
Amenity kits, slippers, socks, earplugs, eye masks, toothpaste, toothbrush, as well as lip balm, face cream, body lotion, and perfume, make the journey even more comfortable.
After the flight stabilizes, a flight attendant will come to set up your dining table. After a satisfying dinner, you can continue to enjoy snacks and fine wines. The meals are exquisite and the atmosphere is lovely, with a big difference from the small candleholder! Seeing that I was watching a movie, the flight attendant quietly handed me a small box of popcorn🍿️, which was really thoughtful! When I went to the place where the plane was prepared for meals, the flight attendant was also eager to show me the selection of red and white wines available, and the snacks were also unlimited!
After a satisfying meal, the flight attendant will make your bed, and you can fall asleep just like at home~ When you're woken up by the flight attendant, it's already time for breakfast!
From Istanbul Airport on the return trip, you must experience their business class lounge, with luggage storage boxes, meeting rooms, a library area, a children's area, and of course, a variety of freshly made delicacies. After eating, go downstairs to the shops to digest, where various souvenirs are easy to pick up, and you might even come across a super cool poster and Salt Bae's restaurant.
The airport is not only the starting and ending point of a journey but also a meeting point of culture and history. Istanbul Airport is fun to explore and play in, with a strong Turkish character. Remember to get Turkish Airlines✈️, whether you're flying directly to Istanbul or transferring to other destinations, it's a great choice.

The Basilica Cistern in Turkey is definitely worth a visit
It really resembles the scenes from some video games, or rather, many game scene designs are inspired by it. Just looking at it can remind you of certain levels.
As for the history, it's true that you need to do some homework before going, or patiently read the on-site introductions (which mainly talk about Turkish hydraulic engineering).
Many people don't think highly of it, finding it boring and not worth the ticket price, but if you're interested in the history of Istanbul, or if you like playing games and reading novels, the cistern is definitely worth a look.
Here's a bit of history:
The Basilica Cistern, known in Turkish as Yerebatan Sarnıcı, which means 'Subterranean Cathedral', was one of the sources of drinking water for the citizens of Istanbul 1500 years ago.
It was built beneath a basilica, hence its name, initially constructed by Emperor Constantine and rebuilt and expanded by Emperor Justinian after the Nika riots of 532. Historical records indicate that 7,000 slaves were involved in the construction of the cistern. The expansion of the cistern provided a filtration system for Constantinople and other buildings on the First Hill, and continued to supply water to the Topkapi Palace after the Ottoman conquest in 1453 until modern times.
During the Ottoman rule, it was renovated twice, once by architect Mehmet Aga under the command of Ahmet Sultan III in 1723.
Another major renovation was completed during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II (1876-1909) in the 19th century.
In the Republican period, it was renovated again between 1985-1987, with 50,000 tons of mud used to fill the walkways and platforms, and it was opened for local and foreign visitors to explore. It underwent another cleaning and renovation in May 1994.
The ceiling is supported by 336 marble columns, arranged in 12 rows of 28, each 9 meters high and spaced 4.8 meters apart. The roof is supported by the columns through arches that distribute the weight. Of these, 98 are in the Corinthian style, while the rest are in the Doric style.
