Ise Jingu is located in Ise City, Mie Prefecture. It is a very important place because it is the origin of all Japanese shrines. It is over 2,000 years old and is considered the most sacred and largest shrine in Japan. Even Japanese people think that they must visit it at least once in their lives. Every year, about 8 million people visit this shrine. Ise Jingu is dedicated to the sun god, who is very important to the Japanese because he is the main god of Shintoism and is the foundation of many rituals. It is also believed that the Japanese emperors are directly descended from him. Inside, there are two main shrines: the Inner Shrine (Naiku) and the Outer Shrine (Geku), and more than 125 smaller shrines scattered throughout the forest. The Inner Shrine is where the goddess Amaterasu is enshrined. Most Japanese people come to pray for success. The area around the shrine is very large, with forests, rivers and waterfalls.
