“Matsusaka beef” is one of the most famous types of beef in Japan. It is beef from cattle raised in Matsusaka City, Mie Prefecture. Matsusaka beef is recognized as one of the three highest quality beefs in Japan, along with Kobe beef from Hyogo Prefecture and Omi beef from Shiga Prefecture. There are many shops selling Matsusaka beef on Okage Yokocho, the old street, but the one we will introduce today is “Ise Ushiwakamaru”, a Matsusaka beef sushi shop located just across the street from the entrance to Ise Jingu Shrine. Ise Ushiwakamaru is a restaurant that serves sushi on sembei sheets instead of plates. Customers can finish the last bite, which is delicious and gives them cool photos to post on social media. The taste is also good. Matsusaka beef is seared to perfection, and a little wasabi is added to make it melt in your mouth when eaten with sushi rice. The sushi has 2 types of Matsusaka beef to choose from: Round (1,200 yen) and Sirloin (1,600 yen). Both types are served as a set on a sembei sheet, 2 pieces per set. You can choose the doneness of the meat. Ise Ushiwakamaru is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Closed every Monday. Every day, there will be customers waiting even before the shop opens. If you don't want to wait in a long line, we recommend going in the afternoon.
