ELISE HAMMOND

Compared to Wuzhen, I prefer this permanently free ancient town

Nanxun Ancient Town is a place I've long heard of, a renowned water town in the south of the Yangtze River. This spring, spurred by the phrase 'Without visiting Nanxun, how can one know the south of the Yangtze?' I hurriedly made my way to the south. Houses by the water, boats rowing gently, red lanterns reflecting against white walls and Huizhou-style tiles, the poetic and picturesque south of the Yangtze River as well as the lively world of ordinary people, Nanxun has it all. Here, there are none of the NPC-like tourists of Wuzhen, nor the commercialism of Zhouzhuang. It retains the simple, quiet, and leisurely daily life. Wandering through the streets and alleys in this ancient town, crossing the small bridges, one might momentarily forget everything. In the lazy sunlight of the late afternoon, sitting by the river, sipping tea, watching the flowing water and the leisurely passing boats, one feels content, at ease, and joyful.
