A Hero Recognized, a Formidable Foe Vanquished—Liang Hongyu Temple

The ancient town of Hexia in Huai'an is home to numerous residences of famous figures, including a temple dedicated to the female hero of the Southern Song Dynasty who resisted the Jin Dynasty—the Liang Hongyu Temple. Liang Hongyu, a native of Beichenfang in Huai'an District, came from humble beginnings, making a living by weaving. She later migrated south with her family to Jingkou (present-day Zhenjiang), where she met and married Han Shizhong, a hero of the Southern Song Dynasty who fought against the Jin Dynasty. From then on, she embarked on a military career. The plaque above the main gate of the Liang Hongyu Temple was inscribed by the late female calligrapher Xiao Xian. The temple consists of a gate hall, east and west wing rooms, and the main hall. In the main hall, a statue of Liang Hongyu in military attire and with a sword at her side stands on the altar, exuding a heroic spirit. Because Liang Hongyu was the seventh child in her family, the Liang Hongyu Temple is also known as the "Seventh Grandmother Temple" among the people. Liang Hongyu's life was marked by outstanding achievements. She participated in suppressing the Miao Fu rebellion and was granted the titles of Lady Anguo and Lady Huguo. In the Battle of Huangtiandang, she personally beat the war drums, commanding the battle alongside Han Shizhong, and held back the Jin army on the south bank of the Yangtze River for 48 days, earning her widespread fame. After her death, the court bestowed upon her the title of Lady Binguo, and she was buried together with Han Shizhong at the foot of Lingyan Mountain in Suzhou.
