"Wat Mahathat Worawihan" Phetchaburi

"Wat Mahathat Worawihan" is located in Mueang District, Phetchaburi Province. There is no clear evidence of when it was built. Some assume that it was built during the Dvaravati - Sukhothai periods, approximately 800-1,000 years ago. This temple is important in terms of art history and archaeology. Important ancient sites include a five-spire prang. The prang was made of laterite according to the Khmer belief in the universe. Originally, there were two prangs, later an Ayutthaya-style prang was built on top of each other, and three satellite prangs were built in the white color. It is considered to be uniquely beautiful and has been a part of Phetchaburi for a long time. Inside the main chapel, there are beautiful murals and important Buddha images are enshrined: the principal Buddha image wearing royal regalia and Luang Pho Sak Sits of Wat Mahathat, which is an 8-inch wide Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya posture and holds a fan in his left hand. The locals call it Luang Pho Wat Mahathat.
