The Hong Kong Observation Wheel was built and operated by Swiss AEX and was officially opened to citizens and tourists on December 5, 2014. Part of the proceeds from the Hong Kong Observation Wheel ticket sales in November 2015 will be donated to the Hong Kong Ocean Park Conservation Foundation for the conservation of Asian wildlife. The Lands Department announced in May 2017 that the land had changed hands and was expected to be handed over to the new operator, The Entertainment Corporation, in September 2017. However, from August 30, 2017, the Ferris wheel was closed early without prior notice, without giving any reason or reopening date, and the website could not be opened. On September 6, 2017, the new and old operators of the Ferris wheel announced that they had reached an agreement to retain the existing Ferris wheel facilities. The Ferris wheel reopened on December 20 of the same year and opened together with the newly completed AIA Vitality Park.
