This year, “taro paste” is the protagonist, bringing a series of popular handmade desserts. Nan Fung Place will hold the "Nan Fung Place Taro Paste Festival – I Want to Learn Taro Paste" from August 1 to August 19. More than 30 local popular IG dessert shops will gather to sell more than 50 handmade taro paste desserts, such as taro cheese macarons, taro paste egg rolls, taro mille-feuille cakes, taro paste toast, taro paste cheese bagels, etc. Some stalls will even introduce festival-limited and event-exclusive flavors, including taro paste mochi mooncakes, taro sauce and milk mochi mille-feuille rolls, "taro paste" French afternoon tea, etc. New stores will be replaced from time to time in the venue, ushering in new summer afternoon tea options every week to satisfy the desire of "taro paste lovers" to try new things! Among the stalls, the one I admire most is Dayeh Organic Farm. Its manager, Ye Yanzhen, was originally a strong woman working in the insurance industry. She worked as a holiday farmer with her family on weekends. Seven years ago, she started renting farmland in Ping Che, Fanling, and her family started a green farming life. Initially, the farmland was used for self-use, allowing parents to resume their previous rural life after retirement and continue their interest in farming. Until last year, Ms. Yip decided to expand the farmland to 1,981 square meters. Because of her brother's work, she was exposed to environmental education. She then decided to transform and build an organic farm to grow organic crops, bringing more local healthy, pollution-free organic seasonal fruits and vegetables to the public, so that they can taste the original taste of Hong Kong. She advocates that "ugly food" refers to agricultural products that have strange appearances and do not conform to traditional aesthetics. Since consumers tend not to buy ugly food, retailers will not purchase ugly food and put it on the shelves for sale, resulting in some ugly food being directly discarded, which is very wasteful. Through this collaboration with Nan Fung Place, Ms. Yip hopes to allow more people to taste the organic crops grown in Hong Kong, and is committed to promoting the culture of accepting ugly food, bringing the concept into the community, and eliminating people’s wrong prejudices about these agricultural products with strange appearances that do not conform to traditional aesthetics, thereby creating new business opportunities for these fruits and vegetables and reducing food waste. We also designed some special recipes for "ugly fruits and vegetables", proving that "ugly fruits and vegetables" have the same nutritional value and can be cooked into delicious food with the same taste. Other farms include Healthy Express and Qiuji Organic Farm. A food collection point was set up at the venue by FOOD-CO, a food sharing platform under St. James' Settlement. Customers are welcome to donate food. The leftover food collected will be donated to grassroots families in need, promoting the spirit of "food sharing" and reducing food waste.
