Shanghai 618 Building!

Today we came to visit the Shanghai Street 618 building, ten of which were built in 1920-1926 and were classified as Grade II historic buildings by the Hong Kong Antiquities Advisory Committee. Architectural Feature 1: Red brick walls The structural main walls of the old-style tenement houses are constructed of double-layered red bricks, while the floor slabs of the basement are constructed of reinforced concrete and placed on the structural walls on both sides. The structural walls extend all the way to the ground and widen below the ground to become a pedestal. The old red brick walls are still preserved! Architectural Feature 2: Columns Since the structural walls are mainly functional, there is not much decorative design. However, the location of the walls between the units still retains the simple semicircular arch recesses, echoing the Western architectural features of the colonnade and exterior facade, and deliberately retaining and showing its original appearance and building materials in the conservation of this red brick wall.
