📝 Hidden Caves & Clear Water: Kayaking in Cheung Chau

#hkwatersports Cheung Chau is known for its buns, seafood, and small-town charm — but this time, I went for something different: a kayaking adventure to explore hidden caves and turquoise waters. And it turned into the perfect mix of exercise and sightseeing! 🚣♂️💙 ⸻ 📍 Getting There • Took the ferry from Central Pier 5 straight to Cheung Chau (about 35–55 minutes depending on fast or slow ferry). • Walked 5 minutes from the pier to the kayak rental shop on the main beach. ⏱️ Travel time: ~40–60 mins 💰 Ferry cost: HK$13–37 (depends on weekday/weekend and fast/slow ferry) ⸻ 💸 Rental & Gear I rented a double kayak with a friend from a local shop right by Tung Wan Beach. 💰 Price: HK$120/hour (life jackets and paddles included) 💡 Bonus: The shop also provided a waterproof bag for my phone and snacks. ⸻ 🌊 The Experience The moment we paddled out, we left the beach crowds behind. The water was calm and sparkling under the sun, with fishing boats rocking gently nearby. We headed east along the coastline, finding rocky outcrops, small deserted beaches, and a hidden sea cave you can paddle into when the tide is right. Inside, it was cool, shaded, and echoey — like a secret hideout. 🏝️✨ On the way back, we stopped at a quiet sandy spot for a short swim before paddling home. My arms were tired, but my camera roll was full of gorgeous photos. ⸻ ⚠️ Tips for First-Timers • Go in the morning before the wind picks up for calmer seas. • Wear quick-dry clothes and reef shoes (some landings have rocks). • Bring water and snacks for a mini beach picnic. • Always check tide and weather before heading to caves. ⸻ ⭐ Final Thoughts Cheung Chau’s kayaking spots are a hidden gem — perfect for mixing adventure with relaxation. It’s beginner-friendly, scenic, and a great way to see another side of the island beyond its famous streets and snacks. Plus, nothing beats ending the trip with a cold drink and mango mochi by the pier! 🥭🥤

Cheung Chau

Cheung Chau, Hong Kong, has always been the king of choice for locals to relax on weekends! From Central, take the ferry and jump away from the rhythm of the city to a small island with unbeatable sea views, village houses, and human touch. This time I share a half-day trip to Cheung Chau, suitable for sunny days out - hiking and seeing the sea + leisurely eating snacks, is definitely the perfect combination to Chill and enjoy the leisure time! 🌊List of Trip Highlights: - Enjoy the view of Victoria Harbor by ferry and enter the slow pace of Cheung Chau Island - Explore the cuisine around the pier, the super-sized fishballs must try - Walk along the coastal hiking trail to enjoy the sea breeze and watch the sunset - Take a random picture of the blue sky sea view, the city worries are all thrown away! 📍Attraction Recommendation: 1. Cheung Chau Ferry Terminal Location: Cheung Chau, Hong Kong From Central Pier, the boat ride is about 1 hour, the boat has a strong sea breeze, you can feel the sea view of Victoria Harbor + South China Sea. After getting off the boat, there are many souvenir shops next to the pier. Big fish balls, coconut milk cool and sweet drinks, shark fin soup, mango glutinous rice dumplings, etc. are popular choices for tourists. Recommendation: The big fishball shop across the pier, a portion of 2 super giant size, Q bomb enough flavor, must eat! 2. Humanity + natural scenery around Cheung Chau Island From the pier, you can see old-style fishing village huts and colorful murals everywhere along the loop around the island. You can explore the most popular "Northern Emperor Temple" or "Cheung Po Tsai Cave", and then walk along the seaside hiking trail. It is recommended to start from East Bay Beach to the observation deck, walk slowly, take pictures while, 1–2 hours easily done. Several times on the way you can see clear water intertwined with distant buildings, perfect for taking pictures! ⛰️ Personal test tips: - Choose a sunny day out, the sky in Cheung Chau is beautifully blue, and the sea view is particularly healing - The hiking trail is mainly by the sea, some roads are more sunny, it is best to bring a hat and sunscreen - Breathable sneakers are recommended for easy uphill and downhill journeys - Some snack bars serve different hours in the morning and afternoon 🍴Food Recommendations: - Big Fish Balls opposite Cheung Chau Ferry Terminal (neighbors strongly recommend!) - Island handmade mango glutinous rice dumplings, coconut milk drinks 🚢Transportation Guide: - To Cheung Chau, you can take a ferry (ordinary/express ferry) at Central Pier, the journey is about 1 hour, and the frequency is more frequent on holidays - You can also choose a fast boat to and from the city, which saves time and is comfortable ✅ Island Ecosystem Tips: - Although Cheung Chau is small, it is crowded on weekends/holidays, so it is recommended to avoid the daytime peak - Some seats near the pier overlook the sea, suitable for slow chill eating - Some sections of the hike are uncovered, remember to refill! When you go to Cheung Chau, you have to take your time. When you are tired from walking, sit down and eat fishballs, blow the sea breeze and look at the distant view. It is definitely the best healing trip for urbanites! If you are planning to relax on the weekend, you might as well choose a good weather to go and experience a day of "slow life" Cheung Chau! #CheungChauDayTrip #HongKongIslandTrip #WharfFood #Hiking andSeaSea #LocalChillLife #CheungChau
