The last remaining pre-war slaughterhouse in Hong Kong

In-depth tour Cattle Depot Artist Village (Former Ma Tau Kok Animal Quarantine Station) Located on Ma Tau Kok Road in To Kwa Wan, the former Ma Tau Kok Animal Quarantine Station (commonly known as the "Cattle Depot") is Hong Kong's only surviving pre-war slaughterhouse. The quarantine station was built in 1908 and was used as a slaughterhouse and animal quarantine center until it closed in mid-1999 after the Sheung Shui Slaughterhouse opened. The former Ma Tau Kok Animal Quarantine Station was declared a Grade II historic building in 2009. The land in front of the Cattle Depot was renovated and transformed into the Cattle Depot Artist Village in 2001 to relocate local artists from the North Point Oil Street Artist Village. The land behind was revitalized and developed into the Cattle Depot Artist Park, which opened in 2019. The Cattle Depot Artist Village offers short-term rental units and open-air spaces for independent artists or art groups to rent. The village regularly hosts various art activities, such as exhibitions and workshops. Not only does the village have a strong artistic atmosphere, but its red brick buildings with tiled roofs, as well as features like the concrete troughs that once provided water for cattle and iron rings used to tie the cattle, also attract many visitors for photography.
