Immaculate Conception Cathedral on Caine Road

The cathedral's predecessor was a chapel located at the junction of Pottinger Street and Wellington Street, completed in 1843 and expanded in 1858, but it was destroyed by a fire in 1859. In 1860, the Catholic Church rebuilt the chapel on the original site. The rebuilt chapel was dismantled in 1886 and reconstructed at the current location on Caine Road, where it has been in use for nearly 140 years. The cathedral underwent renovation in 2002 and was designated a Grade I historic building in 2010. The cathedral is open to the public free of charge. Its magnificent, bright white architecture and solemn, peaceful atmosphere make you feel as if you are inside a grand European cathedral.
