Island Glimmers: Encountering Silent Art in Peng Chau

#HongKongInDepth Peng Chau is a small island where time seems to stand still. It takes about 40 minutes by ferry from Central, and stepping off the boat, you are greeted by the atmosphere of a fishing village and overlapping old houses. There are no cars here, only bicycles and cats, along with an unexpected artistic vibe. The island’s "Grandma’s Tofu Pudding" has been famous for years, but what attracts me more are the murals and installation art scattered everywhere, especially the "Peng Chau Arts Festival" curated by local artists, which transforms alleys, vacant houses, and ruins into art spaces, radiating a quiet strength. Walking along the coast, you can see the remains of old workshops, such as the former match factory and jade processing plant, where a trace of the industrial era lingers amid the ruins. Sitting at the pier at dusk, gazing at the sea, the distant cargo ships and the glow of the sunset blend together, offering city dwellers a rare place for spiritual refuge.
