Mei Ho House Living Museum, opened in December 2013, is the first public housing museum established and managed by the Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association. Many people nowadays may not know that the birth of Mei Ho House originated from a major fire on the night of December 25, 1953, in Shek Kip Mei — the Shek Kip Mei fire. The fire broke out in the hillside squatter area of Shek Kip Mei, mercilessly leaving nearly 58,000 households homeless. In the past, to resettle the affected residents and improve their living conditions, Mei Ho House was completed in 1954, marking the beginning of Hong Kong’s public housing policy. The Mei Ho House Living Museum showcases the former community, changes in public housing environments, and lifestyle habits, playing a crucial role in understanding the history of housing in Hong Kong. 🌟🌟🌟 The visit to Mei Ho House Living Museum was inspired by a child who suddenly shared the history of Mei Ho House while on the MTR passing through Shek Kip Mei. (It’s believed to be part of their general knowledge class.) “Why was Mei Ho House built? It’s the only H-shaped public housing in Hong Kong…” they explained confidently.
