The Ngong Ping Trail is a 5.7km long path that connects the Ngong Ping Village on Lantau Island to Tung Chung via the northeast slope of Maitreya Mountain. The Ngong Ping Plank Road is a road built along the mountain when the cable car was constructed. It is now used as a rescue, escape and maintenance passage for the cable car, and is also open to hikers. The entire route starts at Tung Chung Fire Station, passes through Yat Tung Village and Tung Chung Hau Wong Temple, then to the Ngong Ping Trail, and ends at Ngong Ping Village. The total length is about 7 kilometers. The most distinctive feature of the Ngong Ping Plank Road is that it is almost in balance with the Ngong Ping Cable Car, and the cable car can be seen most of the way.
