Cheung Chau Island is a popular destination among the many outlying islands of Hong Kong. You can take a ferry to Cheung Chau Island from Pier 5 in Central. Without the obstruction of high-rise buildings, the sun here seems more intense, the sea bluer, and the peaceful fishing village scenery is a completely different world from the bustling city area. Perhaps this is what Hong Kong originally looked like. Cheung Chau Hung Shing Temple was founded during the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty and was rebuilt during the Guangxu period. It is one of the larger temples on the island. The Hong Shing King, Emperor Huaguang, and Dragon Mother worshipped here are typical of Lingnan folk beliefs. The stone bay pottery figurines on the ridge are also works from the Tongguang period, poorly preserved, with most of the characters' heads being later additions, possibly due to the strong winds and heavy rains on the outlying islands. In addition to the original inhabitants, Cheung Chau Island also has a large number of immigrants from Chaozhou. They have continuously migrated here during the urbanization process in Hong Kong, now making up a considerable proportion and have their own guild halls. This is also why the Yuxu Palace in Cheung Chau has beautiful inlaid porcelain decorations.
