Phoenix Trail Background The Phoenix Trail is located on Lantau Island, the largest island in Hong Kong. It was named after Phoenix Mountain, the highest peak on the island and was opened in 1984. This hiking trail is approximately 70km long and is divided into twelve sections. The route mainly walks around the South Lantau Country Park, starting from Mui Wo in the east, circling the west coast and returning to Mui Wo. The Phoenix Trail is a circular hiking route that starts and ends at Mui Wo Pier. The first section ascends along the driveway to Nam Shan; the second section climbs over the island's tall mountains such as Er Tung Shan and Tai Tung Shan, and then descends to Pak Kung Au; the third section immediately climbs up the 934-meter-high Phoenix Mountain, descends to Ngong Ping where the Tian Tan Buddha stands, and then gently descends to Sham Wat Road to end the fourth section; the fifth and sixth sections first climb to Kwun Yam Mountain, step into the mountains on the west of the island, then walk through Gu Ting Garden and Long Tsai Wu Garden, and then descend west to Tai O Water Village; the next three sections of the Phoenix Trail will first go south to the Diversion Fort, then along the coastline of southern island, pass Kau Leng Chung, Shek Pik Reservoir and then walk to Shui Hau; after walking through the tenth and eleventh sections of the waterway, you will reach the famous beach Pui O; the final section of the Phoenix Trail will pass Pak Fu Tin and return to Mui Wo to end.
