Oldest Market Building Surviving in Hong Kong

The Western Market in Sheungwan, Hong Kong, the impressive building, standing in between Des Vœux Road Central and Connaught Road Central, has remarkable red brick Edwardian style structure with a handsome granite arch over its entrance. It was completed in 1906 and served as food market until 1988. In 1990, the Antiques and Monuments Office (AMO) identified it as one of the Declared Monuments. In 1991, it was subsequently renovated and converted into a shopping complex for traditional traders, art and crafts. In 2003, it was refurbished and brought back by adopting the concept of adaptive-reuse to accommodate restaurants and boutiques, fabric merchandises and curio shops.
