Centennial Fort

Tung Chung Fort was built in the 12th year of Emperor Daoguang’s reign (1832) as the navy headquarters. Its main purpose was to prevent the British from smuggling opium and pirate invasions. It has silently guarded Tung Chung for over a hundred years, weathering all weather conditions, and is now listed as a statutory monument. #Hong Kong Good Places #LocalTours#Great Places to Visit in Hong Kong#Great Places to Visit in Summer

Tung Chung Battery

The small battery in Tung Chung; During the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty, in order to prevent the opium trade and pirate invasions, the Qing navy at that time upgraded the nearby Dapeng Camp to Dapeng Association. It was completed in 1832 (some say 1817) and was equipped with 6 cannons to control sea traffic. In 1898, Britain leased the New Territories and the fort was abandoned. It was used as the temporary school building of Foshan Huaying Middle School from 1938 to 1940; the Tung Chung Rural Committee later became part of the Tung Chung Public School site. Tung Chung Public School was closed in 2003. During the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, the fort was rebuilt by the Japanese army. After the reconstruction of the fort, the site of the fort was used as a police station. The site of the fort was declared a statutory monument in Hong Kong on August 24, 1979 and was fully renovated in 1988. It now serves as the Tung Chung Rural Committee Office and Exhibition Hall as well as the Tung Chung Chamber of Commerce Office.
