Salt to Salt: An Exhibition of Everyday Objects at Hangzhou Tianmuli

After a long time away, I returned to Hangzhou and found another version of myself in everyday life. From salt in nature to salt in life, this broad yet simple theme is perfect for Japanese artists to express. Ceramics, wood, metal, glass, and fabrics construct scenes of daily life, extending into art. Touching Kota Uenaka's plates and tea scoops, the warm white and imperfect traces reveal a deep tenderness. Mirai Yamaguchi's heat-resistant glassware blends traditional Japanese Edo Kiriko techniques with the European style she learned while studying in France. From the first glance of clarity, it remains captivating over time. I love Chiaki Maki's tea mats. They're understated yet soulful, thin yet structured. She grows her own plants and uses plant dyes to express a humble attitude. We often think of a tea mat as a backdrop for teaware, but the fabric is more like an irreplaceable, ever-present entity. ◽️ During the exhibition weekends, coffee artisans will be on-site.
