Longmen Ancient Town, Hangzhou, Zhejiang - Dongguan Mansion

Among the numerous ancient buildings in Longmen Ancient Town, a brick memorial archway built during the Ming Dynasty stands out. Facing the distant mountains, it exudes grandeur and solemnity, boasting exquisite carvings and rich symbolism. Known as the "Ministry of Works Archway," it bears the inscription "Dongguan Mansion," and its owner was Sun Kun, Vice Minister of Works during the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty. Sun Kun, courtesy name Jingyou, also known as Su'an, was the 41st-generation descendant of Sun Quan. Born in July 1373 (the sixth year of the Hongwu period) and deceased in July 1427 (the second year of the Xuande period), he was orphaned at a young age and raised by his older brother and sister-in-law. In 1406 (the fourth year of the Yongle period), Sun Kun placed 47th in the Zhejiang provincial examination and entered the Imperial Academy. He later served in various departments of the Ministry of Works. Due to his diligence, resourcefulness, and growing reputation, he was soon promoted to Director of the Department of Waterways and Public Works, responsible for overseeing the construction of over 80 giant ships for Zheng He's voyages to the West, a task with a strict deadline. Upon accepting this mission, Sun Kun dedicated himself wholeheartedly, working day and night, meticulously planning and coordinating resources, and ultimately completing the project on schedule. His behind-the-scenes contributions to Zheng He's historic voyages were invaluable. At the age of 55, Sun Kun died in office from overwork. News of his death brought grief to the court and the public, and he was posthumously awarded the title of Vice Minister of Works. Throughout the history of the Sun family in Longmen, Sun Kun's influence on later generations has been profound. His son, Lianfang, had seven sons, and today, 90% of the Sun descendants in Longmen are Lianfang's offspring. To commemorate his father, Lianfang built this "Dongguan Mansion," also known as "Cheng'en Hall." A uniquely shaped pillar stands in front of the hall, straight at the top but slanted at the bottom, appearing twisted. This inevitably brings to mind the saying, "If the upper beam is not straight, the lower beam will be crooked." How could the family of a Vice Minister of Works, responsible for construction projects, use crooked timber for a pillar? It is said that this design was intended as a warning to future generations: in life and conduct, always follow Sun Kun's example of diligence, integrity, and righteousness, and never stray from the right path, lest misfortune befall future generations. This site is a key cultural relic of Fuyang District.
