Legend has it that this temple was founded by Huili, an Indian monk, during the Jin Dynasty (317-420 AD), and it gained prominence during the Five Dynasties when it underwent significant expansion under royal patronage as a mark of reverence to Buddha. Throughout its history, Lingyin Temple has weathered various challenges like wars and religious suppression. Yet, it remains a treasure trove of Buddhist literature and other precious artifacts. Among its highlights is a tablet inscribed by Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911), which visitors can still admire today. The temple houses a towering statue of Sakyamuni carved from 24 sections of camphor wood, standing at an impressive height of 24.8 meters (82 feet) and adorned with gold leaf. Flanking the statue are twenty saintly figures, believed to be guardians of justice, while twelve disciples stand guard along the rear wall.
