When talking about the suburbs of Tokyo, people will think of Kamakura and Enoshima.  But if you want to go hiking, there are fewer people and the local customs are more authentic Mt. Takao in Hachio City is a perfect place for this. It only takes 1 hour to take the Keio Line Express from Shinjuku. There are very few tourists going there on weekdays during the summer vacation, and most of them are local hikers.  Despite this, the visitor center and the restaurant on the mountain have complete English translations, so there is no need to worry about communication problems. Maybe the temperature in the mountains is cooler, so even in mid-July, I still saw hydrangeas that hadn’t wilted yet. I’m so lucky! (The hydrangeas in Kamakura also wither during this period) In addition, there are many hiking routes to choose from. We chose an entry-level hiking route, going up the mountain at 9:00 that day and coming down at around 1:30. We recommend you take the cable car up the mountain, which is said to be the steepest cable car route in Japan.
